Am I the only one that’s happy that Ricky Martin has come out of that oh-so obvious closet?
I remember the first time I saw him strutting around in the video to his one true hit, ‘Livin La Vida Loca’ ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAzd673kDds&ob=av2em ). I remember thinking, “Wow, he’s really good-looking”, obviously that was when slicked back hair and blatant ‘smarminess’ wasn’t something I looked down my nose at. Other than the said song, I can only remember a handful of his other songs. I remember ‘1, 2, 3, Maria’ ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEFxHf9lMpk ), a duet with Christina Aguilera called ‘Nobody Wants To Be Lonely’ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7YXBPMPO1E ) and being slightly excited when he recorded ‘Be Careful (Cuidado Con Mi Corazon)’ ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87t1rtELt3o ) with Madonna, but in general, I have to say that I haven’t really paid that much attention to his career!
Ricky disappeared for quite some time after his career stalled, only to occassionally pop up on crappy ‘one-hit wonder’ and ‘where are they now’ style shows. During that time Ricky ‘came out’, like we didn’t already know, had twins (!) and recorded a new album. He also found the time to write his autobiography, which as he puts it, ‘tells people what they want to know without giving them everything’! Boring! I’m just reading his book now and it’s sooo, I don’t know, annoying! I don’t recommend it, but I WILL finish it!
Anyway Ricky’s new album, ‘Music + Soul + Sex’, is out now and features the single ‘The Best Thing About Me Is You’ ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzxoQ9rbDAA&ob=av2nm ), which also features a return to the limelight for none other than Joss Stone! It’s quite a non-discript song really. It’s definitely his ‘coming-out’ song, but if I were him I’d have chosen something a little bit more uptempo and quite possibly a little bit more risque for my comeback!
The main reason for me writing this blog, is to, rather superficially, comment on what the world of good telling people about his sexuality has done for his looks! Ricky Martin is officially fit! He’s lost the bryll cream, the cheesy polished sheen, smarm and smirk, and thus gaining a collection of body-art, stubble, rugged locks, some rolled-up sleeves and a pair of piercing eyes! Coming out is one of the most liberating and self-defining things a gay person can do and Ricky is living proof that if you feel like a million dollars on the inside, you’ll look like two million dollars on the outside!
Ricky Martin, yes you do!
